most vulnerable populations. Additional government financial assistance is
needed during the economic downturn to encourage states, localities, and
businesses to invest in a more diverse workforce. Due to the continuing
economic downturn and increasing global economic interconnectedness,
diversity is becoming an even more essential factor in the workplace.
(II) The SHRM (2010) report describes workplace diversity as
“an inclusive corporate culture that strives to respect variations in
employee personality, work style, age, ethnicity, gender, religion, socio-
economics, education and other dimensions in the workplace.” The
SHRM study provides encouraging information about the current state
of diversity in the workplace. The study reported increases in the:
Percentage of companies that provide training on diversity issues;
Number of organizations that have a diverse board of directors;
Percentage of organizations reporting that their diversity practices
were effective in achieving their organization's desired outcomes.
Recently, there has been only a slight decrease in the percentage of
organizations with practices that address workplace diversity, and this is
likely related to the recent economic downturn. However the SHRM
(2010) report provides some highlights that describe the correlation
between workplace diversity, enhanced organizational performance, and
benefits to workers.

Leads to higher worker retention, fewer complaints and litigation.
Improves the organization's ability to move into emerging markets.
Promotes a better understanding of the marketplace.

Produces more effective problem-solving.
Enhances the effectiveness of corporate leadership.
Promotes more-effective global relationships.
