A person's emotions are seen as adaptive in that they provide continuous
feedback on their progress toward personal goals. This provides for the
perception that important needs, goals, and wishes have been met,
achieved, or fulfilled. Unpleasant feedback or negative affect signals a lack
of fulfillment in valued areas of life. A person's subjective perception of
domain will also influence their satisfaction with the area. QoL assessment
and intervention procedures can be expected to boost an individual's
QoL and may also reduce the symptoms of disorders that are not directly
related to a specific area of concern such as loss of work.
FUTURE TRENDS FOR THE USE OF QOLT
The purpose of this section is to examine how employers in the future
can ease the job loss situation for employees. It has been found that job
counseling and training programs can be vehicles shifting human
resources to where they are needed in the labor market. On the organiza-
tional level, they can enhance human resource utilization, decrease
perception of psychological contract breach, and minimize internal strains
and organizational conflict. On the individual level, QOLT appears to be
an efficient and useful way of dealing with dismissed or remaining work-
ers. Consequently, many of the organizational, psychological, family, and
social difficulties brought on by job dismissals during an economic crisis
may be avoided or minimized.
Integrated QoL service delivery systems should be considered coequal
with and conducted concurrently with other symptom-oriented assess-
ments and intervention methods. QOLT should be evaluated in terms of
its potential for effective assessment and treatment. The goal of workplace
interventions should be to maintain or enhance QoL in addition to
addressing the effects of involuntary job displacement. Routine QOLT
assessment and intervention alliances with psychology and medicine can
be expected to improve displaced workers QoL. QOLT interventions can
directly reduce life dissatisfactions in areas such as self-esteem and goals
and values related to job displacement. This can occur even when such
interventions are not directly related to work domains ( Frisch, 1994b ).
Integrated service delivery systems that include greater alliances
between QOLT, medicine, psychology, and other disciplines have been
recommended. These types of partnerships are already being successfully
employed in medical, comprehensive social service, and mental health
